Forage and Fire is a week long ceramics and nature retreat. In this course participants will collect minerals, process them to prepare ceramic glazes, and fire them in a wood burning kiln. Lessons on design and ceramic techniques will be accompanied by daily hikes and field trips to locations featuring mineral deposits, fossils, and historic sites. Themes addressed in this workshop will include bringing the outdoors into the studio to make it an intrinsic part of your art, and making personally and culturally relevant ceramics by using materials that are close at hand. Wild Cove Pottery is located in Port Union, Newfoundland, within Discovery Global Geopark, an area renowned for its natural and cultural heritage, especially its geological and paleontological features. A neighbouring region was home to an early but now defunct brick making industry, so many interesting ceramic resources are located nearby. Workshop leader Michael Flaherty has researched and harvested many of these resources and uses them in his pottery and sculpture. Participants should be prepared to spend time outdoors in variable weather conditions. Tools and consumables are included in the course fee, but participants must bring their own bisque fired ceramic wares for the firing.
